Kisah sukses Mark Zuckerberg dengan facebooknya sebenarnya berawal dari rasa kecewa pada seorang gadis. Terbentuklah sebuah situs bernama facemash yaitu situs untuk mencari tahu siapa yang “terpanas” di kampus. Dia mengundang pengguna untuk membandingkan dua wajah yang berbeda jenis kelamin dan meminta untuk memilih siapa yang paling hot.

Kemudian terciptalah sebuah situs facebook dengan nama awal thefacebook.com. Situs itu dengan cepat menggoda banyak orang. Di akhir sekolah, Mark Zuckerberg dan kelompoknya memindahkan operasi awal tentang facebook mereka ke sebuah rumah sewa dengan 4 kamar tidur di Palo Alto , California yang kemudian jadi rumah dan kantor.
